University Elementary School is aiming to install inclusive playground equipment items in and around the current playground equipment. University has over 100 students with special needs, and this number is constantly growing.  In an inclusive play space, children of different abilities can play together, ensuring no one is left out.  We are a “We Care” school which means we strive to teach acts of caring and acceptance of all people to our children.  We want all students to have the opportunity to play alongside their peers.

This was something Mrs. Mainiero, prior University Principal, started several years ago and has raised over 20k for, which is in a playground fund at University.  It all started because of Waylon Acklin, who is now in 4th grade.  We think it is important to complete this project before he goes to 5th grade.  I believe it will also benefit us as a school to lead the way with inclusivity especially since we are a “We Care School”.
